Boats in Rowing Boats
Featured archive pages
History
Rowing boats were used for fishing, for tenders to get out to bigger photos, as a means of transport for example the ferry across the estuary at Sandside and for leisure. Regattas featured rowing races. Crossfields hired out rowing boats to visitors to Arnside. Old photos of Arnside and Grange show several rowing boats kept on the shore at Arnside and Grange, most of which would have built by Crossfield.

The above photo shows two girls sat on a rowing boat that would probably have been used for fishing, judging by the nets in the back of the boat.
The below photo shows Fred Crossfield rowing a party of ladies at Arnside probably at low tide. The design of the boat is similar to rowing skiffs used on Windermere.

The below photo shows a similar boat on the beach at Arnside with the Customs House, which was knocked down in 1924 to widen the road behind the pier.
